Q. Why did Moses beg God to let him into the promise land? Does this have something to do with Moses representing the law? What my question is mainly referring to is why would Moses not want to be with God instead of this physical land?
A. Moses did make request of God to enter the promise land of Canaan:
Deuteronomy 3: 23 And I besought the LORD at that time, saying, 24 O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might? 25 I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.
26 But the LORD was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me: and the LORD said unto me, Let it suffice thee; speak no more unto me of this matter.
God denied his request and told him he would see the land but not cross over. Moses would die in the mount:
Deuteronomy 32: 49 Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession: 50 And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people: 51 Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.
52 Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.
There was a spiritual reason why God did not want Moses to lead the people of Israel across the Jordan river: the reason was that Moses was a type and figure of the law of God. The law of God leads us to Christ. And therefore unto the promised land of the kingdom of God (heaven); but the law of God cannot bring us all the way into it:
Romans 10: 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Christ is the end of the law! Moses led Israel all the way to the very point of entering Canaan but could lead them no further. That task was left to Joshua (the name Joshua is the equivalent of Jesus). Joshua would lead them over into the promised land. The law (Moses) led the people of God (the elect) to its end (Christ). And Christ brought them the rest of the way.
But your question is: why did Moses want to cross Jordan and enter the promised land--which was only a figure of the true promised land of heaven itself; rather than die and go to be with the Lord and enter into a far better place (heaven) than anything on comparable on earth?
I think we have to keep in mind that Moses was just a man. A person like us. A man whose focus for over 40 years (perhaps as many as 80 years since he thought about delivering his people the first time at age 40) was on bringing his people out of captivity and into the promised land. The land given to Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob.
Moses had come close years earlier when the spies searched out the land. But then it was God’s judgment that Israel wander in the wilderness for forty years. Now the fortieth year had come and it was God’s will that he not cross over into it. Certainly we can understand the human desire that must have been present within Moses to reach this land. We should not think that he wanted to go and build a house and live there for a long period of time. His desire was only in crossing over into it. Once he had crossed the Jordan and set foot on the land of Canaan it would have been as though his long standing mission was accomplished. More than likely Moses was seeking only to die on that side of the Jordan river.
But again, God could not permit that. God was writing the Bible. And the spiritual dimension of the Word of God concerning this point demanded that Moses die on that side the river. And that he not be permitted to cross over.
Q. CHRIST ENTERED INTO HEAVEN ITSELF, COMING FROM WHERE?
Hebrews 9:24 KJVS
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
Christ entered into heaven, coming from where? If we say he entered into heaven coming from the world [ earth ], then that would be a CONTINUATION of the work of the cross which some claimed to be a demonstration.
Continuation of the work of the cross has to do with the high priest, Christ, carrying the sacrificial blood into the holy places [ heaven ].
Hebrews 9:12 KJVS
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us .
A. The language God uses is that Christ died for the sins of His people at the foundation of the world. At that point He was laden with the sins of His people. He shed His blood for those sins and ‘obtained eternal redemption’ for them (Hebrews 9:12).
The cross WAS demonstration of the atoning work Jesus performed at the point of the world’s foundation. There is no other legitimate possibility. The Bible in the passage you are quoting from gives us 2 key points concerning God’s redemption program:
1. Before any can be heirs and gain an inheritance there must FIRST be the death of the testator:
Hebrews 9: 16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
If, as your doctrine states, Jesus died making payment for sins in 33 AD then all of the Old Testament saints could not have inherited the kingdom of heaven (since the testator had not yet died).
2. Secondly, this passage in Hebrews 9 declares:
Hebrews 9: 21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
The Bibles says that you must first have the shedding of blood before you can have remission of sins. Again, according to your faulty understanding of the Word of God, the Old Testament saints have no grounds for forgiveness (remission) of their sins. And according to you Jesus did not shed His blood in making payment for the sins of His people until 33 AD. Therefore Christ did not die until over 11,000 years of history had unfolded. And Christ’s blood was not shed for any of those that lived and died for over 11,000 years of history.
Here is a small sampling of the errors that arise as a result of your erroneous understanding of when Jesus made payment for the sins of His people:
1. you have heirs inheriting before the death of the testator
2. you have sins remitted before the shedding of blood
3. you have the building of the spiritual house of God before the foundation stone (Christ) has been laid
4. you have the First begotten of the dead (Jesus) not be the first begotten from the dead (as Moses died and was resurrected before Jesus in 33 AD)
5. you have the Son called the Son and creating the world as the Son of God before He has died and risen from the dead and thus declared to be the Son of God
6. you have works finished from the foundation of the world (Hebrews 4:3) that apparently were not finished
7. you have direct statements (Jesus the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world--Revelation 13:8) that you modify by picking up and adding the theological statement of ‘in principle’ that is not in the Bible anywhere
God’s elect people that understand that Christ made payment for sins at the foundation of the world have no problem whatsoever, no difficulty at all, in providing Scriptural answers for all these things:
A. Jesus the Testator died at world’s foundation thus making inheritance immediately available to elect
B. Christ shed His blood from world’s foundation: as a result sins could be remitted right from the beginning (Abel could be saved, Noah could find grace, etc).
C. Christ the Corner Stone was laid first at world’s foundation. God could immediately begin to build His house as those saved were as living stones built up a spiritual house.
D. Jesus was first to die and first to rise as He rose from the dead from the world’s foundation, and was at that point of resurrection the first born from the dead. All others came after.
E. Jesus died and rose at point of world’s foundation declared to be the Son. Then as the Son of God He spoke and created the worlds. Later, as the Son of God (already) He entered into the world born of the virgin Mary.
F. All works concerning the atonement (payment for sins) were finished at foundation of world.
G. Direct statements (Jesus: Lamb slain from foundation of the world) are true and accurate.
You see we have no problems whatsoever. All fits together. All harmonizes.
You have a lot of work to do to harmonize all those other things (and there’s more beside that). And simply saying (out of your own mind): it was done in principle, is not sufficient harmonization. You are changing the words of the Bible when you say that.
Q. Bro. Chris, Can you explain Exodus 4:2 - 4. The rod in the hand of Mose represent what in this chapter?
A. Here’s the verses you’re asking about:
Exodus 4: 2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.
4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:
Moses’ rod would become a central figure in bringing about God’s plagues upon Egypt:
Exodus 8: 5 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.
Exodus 9: 23 And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.
Exodus 10: 13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day, and all that night; and when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts.
Exodus 14: 16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.
The rod is used again and again as an instrument of bringing wrath upon the enemies of God. When we carefully consider how this word rod (Strong’s #4294) is used we find that it identifies with the Word of God the Bible. God speaks of hearing the rod in a similar way that He would refer to hearing His Word:
Micah 6: 9 The LORD'S voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.
This word is also translated as ‘staff’ and in some places God speaks of breaking the staff of bread:
Ezekiel 4: 16 Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I will break the staff of bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with care; and they shall drink water by measure, and with astonishment:
Bread points to Christ or the Word of God. Breaking of the staff (or rod) of bread indicates God is bringing a spiritual famine upon a rebellious people.
Putting it all together we see that Moses (a picture of the law/ word of God) is using the rod as an instrument of wrath because it represents the word of God the Bible. And it is the Bible that brings condemnation of the wicked people of the world.
Q. Chris, Is Genesis 1:7 related to Numbers 19:1-9?
Genesis 1:7
And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
Numbers 19:9
And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation: it is a purification for sin.
A. No I don’t think so. The word used for ‘separation’ in Numbers 19:9 leads us in the direction of ceremonial cleansing. It is interesting that the burning of the heifer and its ashes are kept for a “water of separation”. How can ashes be counted for water of separation?
Let’s look at some of the earlier verses:
Numbers 19: 5 And one shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn: 6 And the priest shall take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer. 7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even. 8 And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.
The burning of the heifer spiritually points to the cleansing away of sin. Or washing away sin. Spiritually, to wash or to burn are synonymous things. Both accomplish the removal of sin. This is why the Bible pictures Jesus as going through fiery wrath to make atonement for the sins of His people. And yet also pictures Jesus being baptized (baptism is done with the washing of water) in the taking away of our sin.
Q. Chris, Might there be a distinction made between the waiting of the nations in the death of the fall and the waiting of believers in the death of Christ, for the day of salvation?
A. I’m not sure I fully understand your question? Are you referring back to mankind’s fall into sin in the garden of Eden? And by the ‘waiting of the nations’ do you mean waiting for God’s wrath to complete and for them to be destroyed at the end of the world?
Also, regarding the waiting of the believers for the day of salvation: are you referring to Christ entering into the world and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost? Or something else?
Q. Hi Chris
Can you please explain the meaning in Daniel 2:21 : " And he changeth the times and the seasons" ?
Thank you
Dan 2:19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
Dan 2:20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
Dan 2:21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
Dan 2:22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
A. The Hebrew word translated as ‘times’ (Strong’s #5732) is not the typical word used in association with God’s time table of times and seasons. The Hebrew word (Strong’s #2166) translated as seasons is also not the typical word for God’s program of times and seasons. It is however, a word that has the identical spelling and vowel pointing as (#2165) a word used in the book of Esther:
Esther 9: 27 The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;
31 To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.
These verses in Esther are helpful to us because an evil man (Haman, a type of Satan) developed the times the Jews were to be killed through the casting of lots (purim). But God changed the time from an horrible time of death for the Jewish people to one of victory and blessing.
When we check the context in Daniel chapter 2 we find something similar: there, king Nebuchadnezzar (a type of Satan) issues a decree that all the wise men of Babylon are to be killed. Typically in the Bible the wise represent God’s elect. And therefore the killing of the wise men of Babylon is similar to king Ahasauerus’ granting of Haman’s request that all the Jews (picturing spiritual Israel) were to be killed on a set day.
King Nebuchadnezzar refers to those that would seek to change the time (the time he had set for their execution) in these verses:
Daniel 2: 7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.
8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
It was only through God’s revealing of the king’s dream (and interpretation of it) to Daniel that spared the lives of all the wise men of Babylon. Which means God changed the time the king had appointed for their death:
Daniel 2: 20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: 21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.
Q. A man from Jodhpur, India writes in E Bible’s ‘The Bible Answers Muslims Questions’ group: “ Only our lord jesus is alpha and omega!he is the son of God,no one can save without him,he is the savior!!”
A. Yes you are correct. And since He is the Saviour He is also the Lord Jehovah, God Almighty in the flesh:
Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
Jehovah God says He alone is Saviour. Who then was born in Bethlehem?
Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
The Saviour was born in Bethlehem (the city of David). Therefore God, the only Saviour, in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ was born into the world.
Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Q. A man from Dessie, Ethiopia writes in the Bible Answers Muslims Questions group: “ pls for God sake tell me what can I do? I confused because am not Christan some body tell me Jesus is the son of God and him self is also the God that mean he is God. so what can I believe? to God or to his son or to ghost but I want to believe in Father of Jesu's that mean Muslim. Muslim believe in Jesus Father. how God have a son. how that's can true.”
A. Your confused because you do not understand the manner in which God is referring to Jesus as the “Son of God”. Jesus is not God’s Son because of birth as men in the world give birth to sons. Christ existed as eternal God from eternity past. He has always been. He did not enter into existence, or begin to exist at the point when He was declared to be the Son of God. God tells us exactly the reason why Jesus is called the Son of God in these verses:
Romans 1: 3,4 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was ... declared to be the Son of God ... by the resurrection from the dead:
Colossians 1: 18 ... who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Revelation 1: 5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead,
These Scriptures make it clear that Jesus was given the name of “Son” due to the fact that He was the first to rise from the dead. He is the firstborn Son in the sense that He was the first to die and come back to life again.
